cystema @ 23°8'27.054"N 82°21'10.117"W is a site-specific sculpture and sound installation on the façade and interior of the Centro Contemporáneo Wilfredo Lam in Havana, Cuba. The title is a hybrid of the word cyst and the spanish word sistema for system; the installation alters the building with sculptural forms and a sound component that takes over its exterior and interior, like a virus. cystema @ 23°8'27.054"N 82°21'10.117"W references a systemic illness or disease. It speaks of power relationships and relationships of dependence whether those are political, sexual or somatic. The sculptural forms teeter between being toy-like and being toxic and dangerous, they surreptitiously take over an entire system, altering and making one question which is the host and which is the appendage. Like the sculptural forms, the sound oscillates between trance and pop music in Spanish and English, and sounds of violence creating a soundscape that makes violence palatable and alluring.
