Marea Series, 2014-2016

The Marea Series is part of an ongoing project for which a group of bodies were filmed and photographed at El Espino Beach in El Salvador. The bodies float, meander and oscillate a “la orilla del mar” (at the edge of the sea). In this series of photographs, a doubled, endless sea seems to consume the diminutive bodies, which are also doubled but not mirrored. The site has multiple meanings for me, some very personal. The work speaks about a territory that is undergoing social, economic and political change. It also references migration, exile and the tenuous relationship of the contemporary body to locale. The title functions as a double-entendre—in Spanish, it’s the noun for tide, as well as the verb for being dizzy or seasick.
