SURROGATE, 2016
Installation, Repurposed wood, audio equipment, & burlap, audio rt: 30min. on loop
12" depth x ø 9 1/2" each element, Installation views at MAKESHIFT, Kalamazoo, MI and Galeria Malagana, Managua, Nicaragua.
Two identical cylindrical forms function as speakers that play an audio interspersing an ethereal soundscape with sounds of war—gunshots, helicopters, bombings. The wood came from furniture that belonged to my father and stepfather, both deceased. This personal work taps into my sense of memory through its materiality and reference to growing up in Nicaragua during the Somoza dictatorship, war, and its aftermath. This work follows a series of works that deal with mimesis and doubling to actively engage the viewer in perceptual and sensorial experiences.
